My biggest drive to stay in college is the fact that higher education was originally built to support white men. I had struggled a lot trying to not be a token and find my voice, but I had put aside my student experience to make sure that another student does not feel as beaten down as I am.

Creative DIY Publishing: Not What I Expected

During one of my terms in college, I decided to take a course called Creative DIY Publishing. I decided to make a zine about my experience being a Black girl at a predominately white institution (PWI) in a way written like a diary entry I would write with a lot of spelling errors and random but meaningful doodles. I have also tried to incorporate some pop culture and historical references in the project. The zine was made using Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, and Procreate.

For my final project as an art major, I wanted to visually represent my college experience as a Black girl and at a predominantly white institution (PWI). I wanted to express my emotions towards different experiences I have had a young Black woman. To achieve this, I thought it would be best to play around with the absence and presence of the face in different ways. I tried to use abstract symbolism to give direct clues to my own experiences. I decided to do this out of fear of college officials. My goal in doing this is to make my audience feel similar emotions to what I felt during my time in college. In addition, I want to educate them about things that are meaningful to young Black women students such as tokenism, hair, and education.

There is a growing need for diverse, equitable, and inclusive social media practices in the social media space. According to an article from Sprout Social, social media users can tell when a business or organization is being authentic about their marketing strategies. Therefore, they would want to align themselves with a business that shares their own ideals and identities. Given this, why should businesses not want to match the values and ethics of their audience? The goal of this is to better help businesses and organizations practice authentic, representative, and accessible social media practices that social media marketing groups can utilize tools, resources, and knowledge to best represent their organization/business in an authentically inclusive way that best represents their audience and the people within the organization. This would be a website that is easily accessible independently and in group settings. Ideally, this website will provide users with tools, resources, consulting, and workshops to better build a more inclusive community within social media spaces.
